ADOPT ME

CHOICEY, AGED 18, 15.2HH, THOROUGHBRED, GELDING, COMPANION HORSE ONLY

If you are searching for a companion horse with the X factor then you have to check out Choicey!

This gorgeous 18-year-old chestnut thoroughbred stands 15.2hh and is a real head turner who loves a little fuss.

Looking for a forever home as a non-ridden companion horse, Choicey is said to display behaviours "typical of his breed", so rescue charity Bransby Horses believe he would be best suited to a home used to thoroughbreds.

Said to be “full of character” and “a firm favourite on the yard,” Choicey enjoys his food as well as handling and grooming.

Like most thoroughbreds, he thrives on routine and still shows a real zest for life, despite having mild kissing spine and hind-limb lameness.

Although there isn’t much detail to be had about his past, it is known that he spent a large portion of his life prior to coming to Bransby Horses in a racing environment. As a result, he has grown accustomed to being stabled overnight and turned out in the day, fed at set times and kept in a constant routine.

As is typical of his breed, any changes in Choicey’s routine can unsettle him and he also becomes anxious if his friends are taken away.

Generally good to handle, his carers say he can be sensitive to rugging up and may threaten to nip so, again, a home experienced with such behaviour would best suit this otherwise sweet boy.

Although he likes his stable, Bransby Horses have transitioned Choicey to living out 24/7 in the summer months with access to a shelter.

He wears a fly rug throughout the summer, a middle weight rug in autumn, and a heavy weight rug in winter.

While he has only lived with geldings at Bransby Horses, he has been happily stabled next to mares with no issues, but he is said to benefit from living with horses of similar size and with similar management needs.

Good with the farrier, Choicey is shod in front and he also sees the dentist for a check-up every six months.

Choicey has a history of ulcers that have been treated and resolved, though he requires a daily dose of Danilon in his feed.

Regarding feed, in summer Choicey receives a small scoop of fibre twice a day. In winter he receives a scoop of fibre and a scoop of comp balancer twice a day with added oil.
